Environmental Impact » Cultural Heritage

The cultural heritage assessment is concerned with the effect that the development may have on all aspects of the historic environment, both on the site and in the surrounding area.

The landscape surrounding the proposed site has a range of cultural heritage elements such as archaeological sites, listed buildings and designed historic landscapes. The site itself has not been the subject of any archaeological investigations due to its upland location and areas of peat, and as a consequence the true nature of the archaeological resource remains uncertain.

The site has been surveyed recently to assess the likely impacts of this proposal. The site contains no Scheduled Ancient Monuments and only one category C listed building. There are, however, areas designated by Dumfries and Galloway Council as Archaeological Sensitive Areas. These include the remains of two Bronze Age burial monuments – kerb cairns - on the southern face of Craigenlee Fell. The wind farm has been designed to avoid impact on these important features.

There are several listed buildings and structures within the Dunskey Estate, which lies immediately south-west of the boundary. Potential indirect impact of the proposals on the setting of all of these structures will be carefully assessed to ensure no adverse effects arise.
